Brüt
LOCATION: BRÜT CHAMPAGNE AND WINE BAR IN OLD TOWN, ALEXANDRIA
Brüt examines the fierce freedom of expression that emerged with the first-wave of feminism in the 1920’s.
THE SETTING
Brüt is the quintessential neighborhood hangout, a welcoming space where patrons can meet new (or old) friends. When I step into the Brüt, I immediately feel a buzz of community and smiles swirling around me. The moment I sit at the bar, I know something magical can happen with a simple “hello.” This is the essence of what makes Brüt so special: the act of people exchanging warm words and ideas, of being transported to different parts of the world through a simple sip of wine, sparkly cava, or a sensuous rosé.
The Stylists at North team fell in love with the lush, gorgeous flower wall created by Ellie Cashman Design (an expat living in the Netherlands). I was obsessed with the wall the moment I laid eyes on it and knew it would serve as the backdrop for my next editorial blog post.
THE INSPIRATION
This shoot draws from the feminine energy of the 1920’s – an era of the geisha mystique, liberation of the roaring Jazz Age, and expressive gender-bending force of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The makeup was influenced by a collection of precious gems that the owner of Brut, Dustin, curated for us. And the stunning clothes were provided by the Arlington-based vintage boutique, Amalgamated.
I’m proud that this editorial is being launched in conjunction with our three-year anniversary. It’s been amazing to see my dream manifest and to unite a tribe who celebrates their unique self. I’m also grateful to highlight special spots in our community that help us shine.
